I'm trying to remember what time lunch (dinner) was served when I was in school. I'm pretty sure it was 12 noon. My secondary school had 4 different dining rooms, so there were no separate sittings - everyone had the same lunch period/dinner time, though sometimes it did feel as though we spent much of it queuing! I'm pretty sure we had at least an hour for lunch too, maybe a little longer. Some kids went home to eat, and others to the local chippy. When I was in 6th form we persuaded one of the PE teachers to give up some of his lunch break one day a week to open the swimming pool for us. We must have had at least 20 minutes in the pool to make it worthwhile.
School lunch hours over here are much shorter - certainly nowhere near an hour. Both my kids complain that they don't have enough time to eat all their lunch, though I know part of that is because they spend too much time talking! Still, I was shocked to look at DD's schedule today and realize that her lunch hour is only 24 minutes long. Not only that, but she has 'first lunch' - which starts at 10:48 a.m. Not even time for elevenses and she's having lunch?!

Yup. I discovered my son had lunch at 10.50 when in kindergarten, because one day he'd forgotten his packed lunch. I was passing the school, so dropped it off at 10.45, just a random moment, but I was greeted by the teacher saying "just in time!" I couldn't believe how early it was. But then they start school at 8.15, so the whole day is skewed earlier than in Britain.
I don't understand why schools don't join the dots. If you don't give children enough time to eat lunch, and then enough playtime to let off steam, they're not going to be very productive in the afternoon. Surely another 20 mins (10 mins lunch, 10 mins recess) would pay dividends?
OK now that is ridiculous and I would be creating a rucus. When I first moved to the States (21 years ago) I was shocked that people started eating lunch at 11.30am, (and still am). I was used to having lunch at about 1pm. I must admit, I usually start eyeing the clock around 12 these days, but before 11am? NO.
The ridiculous thing at our school is that the little ones are given a snack at 9.30am, an hour after they start (because some kids don't have time for breakfast), then have lunch at 12, then have to go till 3.10 with nothing. Not a good meal plan.
My kids have 20 mins...it is ridiculous as for the time...hello thatis before elevenses!!!!! These are teenagers...they need sleep & food.
Yep, an hour for lunch between 12 and 1. There was an awesome chippy about a 20 minute walk away which did a lunch special of sausage and chips for £2.50.
10.48 is no time for lunch! That's ridiculous.
My oldest son has lunch at 10:30 a.m. which I was a bit alarmed about until I realised his school starts at 7:30 a.m.
I don't understand the lunch schedule. For me the earliest the better, because when school starts at 7:30 a.m. the appropriate time for lunch would be 3hrs later, but 2:00p.m. doesn't make any sense, since the kids get out of school at 2:30 and they will eat at home as soon as they get out of school.
