27 years

I just realized tonight that I forgot to change the header for this blog back in August - the anniversary of my arrival in the USA. It's been 27 years now. I've lived here more than half my life. Most of my life. I'm still not sure that I can really grasp that. And last week, someone I had just met randomly asked me to say "schedule". When I asked why, she commented that she had noticed my accent.  More than half my life in the USA and I still don't sound American!

Wow, that's some time. I only managed 4 years abroad in Germany, but that seemed a long time. I wonder at what point your accent finally goes over to the native?

I'm not quite at the half way mark but it's still a long time. I have lived here (in Chicago) longer than I have lived anywhere in my life. And I have itchy feet!
So are you now "more" American?

Addy - I don't think the Englishness in my accent is ever going to go away at this point.
Expat mum - I've contemplated changing the name of the blog to "Barely British." :-)

'Barely British'! LOL! Well are you? I'm sure it's different for everyone, how much people take on of the host culture.

I was telling someone the other day that I was at the halfway mark and there was this weird silence between us--an unasked question, 'so does that make you more British or American?' I just changed the conversation! I sense some blog posts on the topic coming up for some of us...
