What does Barbie drink?

Last weekend we had some very good friends over for dinner who we hadn't seen since before Christmas and we finally got to exchange Christmas presents. Although they often buy things I wouldn't for the kids, they are extremely thoughtful and always hit the nail on the head in terms of choosing something the kids love. This year they got DD a Barbie.

This is her first Barbie doll ever and she was very excited about it. It came with a kitchen, so she is a very domestic Barbie. Hmm . . . Oh well. That's OK. DD knows that in our house the kitchen is really Dad's and Mom only gets to use it on school nights to make sure we eat early enough to get everyone to bed on time. Anyway, DD was delighted and has played with it a lot in the last week.

I had to laugh when I saw the 'instructions' that came with the kitchen though. Not instructions on how to assemble it - no, it came pre-assembled. Look:

I guess they think Barbie users are really dumb if they need to have explained to them how to put the lid on a saucepan, or how to open a cupboard door! About the only 'instruction' there that might actually have been needed was showing that the hook above the oven was to hang the chandelier from. There was also an image of all the (very tiny!) parts that came with it.
Can you spot the item that surprised me? (Think about this blog post title.)

You see, there's a tea kettle, and even some honey for the tea, but no tea cups. However, Barbie does have champagne glasses!

Good Lord. Suggesting the "little girls grow up to be like Paris Hilton" thing perhaps?

Maybe the kettle is just for show - she probably buys her skinny latte at Starbucks and drinks it out of a styrofoam cup!

Of course dahling! Barbie drinks everything from the champagne glasses!

Quite a funny observation actually. I agree with nappy valley girl, kettle must be for show and coffee (skinny) comes from Starbucks!

Champagne glasses......too funny. I seem to remember that I had a Barbie kitchen that came with champagne glasses when I was a kid.

Sadly, in my house, my daughter probably would need to have a diagram for the saucepan--not because she isn't smart, but because she hasn't ever seen one used. I am a kitchen slacker!

Lol! It would be interesting to see what Mattel would have to say if questioned on that one!

C'mon. Barbie has a BLENDER. She's probably drinking a daiquiri or margaritas.

That is too funny!! So, did you go out and buy some tea cups for Barbie then? I mean, how on earth can you have a kettle and no cups?

re. Canoez

Many years ago when Almost American was a babe in arms, her mother taught pre-schoolers in a class where the children in the home corner invited the staff to cocktail parties rather than coffee mornings !! Honest

DD hasn't commented on the odd assortment of accessories yet - I don't think she's really noticed! I think the kettle is just for show. It surprised me it was there at all - it still doesn't seem to be a particularly common appliance in American kitchens.

Anonymous mother - if I was a babe in arms, I'm guessing that was in the school that served the embassy community?

A couple of years ago when I was working in a kindergarten class one of the boys playing in the housekeeping corner asked me if I'd like a beer. I told him I'd rather have a cup of tea.

This is great! Thanks for sharing!

ROFL! Just got DD to look at the picture of the accessories and tell me about them. She truly had not thought about the assortment:
"What does she use the blender for?"
"Blending honey and things"
"What does she use the kettle for?"
"Making tea"
"What does she drink it out of?"
Stunned silence.
"I don't know."
"What are those?"
"Champagne glasses."
"What does she drink out of them?"
"I don't know - maybe they should be coffee cups! Or tea cups probably!"

Hi
Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving that super helpful clue. It twigged a memory I have of actually doing a website design course many years ago. I'll make those my next assignment.
I have a lovely friend here, mum to two boys. She scored hugely with my younger girls this Christimas with the gift of Barbies. Dog walking Barbie. With a dog. A dog that eats and poops. Barbie is armed with a pooper scooper to pick up the teeny magnetic poops. Times two of course. I suspect a recall is in order. I am happy to report most of the poo is "lost".
Your Barbie has bigger problems than no tea cups...
no cutlery! But then again, apart from chugging margaritas she probably doesn't eat much.
